Your kitchen pantry is a symbol of order, organization, and cleanliness. When set up correctly, it’s not only easier to find the items you need to make dinner — it’s also aesthetically pleasing! Follow these steps for creating a highly functional and lovely pantry.

1) Store your staples in the front of your pantry (where you’ll be able to see them) in separate shelves or bins. These should be foods you use frequently and in large quantities (e.g., sugar, flour, canned soups).

2) Clear everything out of your pantry. Now is the time to toss any expired or unappetizing food items you may have hidden away at the back of the shelf. This includes anything in boxes that might be dusty or dried out (e.g., cookies, crackers).

You might want to donate any canned goods that don’t fit on your shelves anymore after consolidating them according to type (i.e. canned veggies, canned soup, etc.) You can also organize your store by types of food (i.e. canned vegetables, jarred spaghetti sauce, pasta).

3) Store things you use less often but still need on their own shelves. These should include herbs and spices as well as larger quantities of items (e.g., peanut butter, jelly).

4) Store things that are less frequently used (e.g. paper towels, dish detergent, laundry detergent) in the rear of your pantry.

5) Store your bulk items (e.g. canned soup, pasta sauce) in a separate bin on the bottom shelf or somewhere else that’s easy to access.

6) Clear things out of your cabinets and empty out any drawers at this time as well — especially if you have any extra room! Make sure to donate any expired food items and junk mail if you have room for it. If not, put them away until you do (months/years down the road).
