Pets are great additions to your family. With all that care and affection, you’re going to want to ensure that your house is safe for everyone — especially the cutest and furriest members of the family.

Here’s 5 ways to make your home safer for your furry little friends:

1) Vaccinate Properly

Vaccinating against vaccine-preventable diseases is the single most important thing you can do to protect your pets. Diseases like distemper, parvo and kennel cough can be fatal for pets. Additionally, even though these diseases aren’t usually deadly in humans, they’re still risky for a lot of other creatures, including your dog or cat.

2) ID Your Dog

Always make sure you know what type of dog you’re bringing into your home — especially if it’s a puppy. Make sure the dog has an identification tag with his name and your number in case he is lost.

3) Everyday Pet Food

“The types of bacteria that cause food poisoning can be found on all types of pet foods — dry kibble, canned pet foods or raw meat diets,” says Dr. Johnson. “Bacteria like salmonella, listeria, and E. coli can live on any type of food that is not handled or cooked properly.

4) Clean Up After Your Pet

Although humans usually walk around with dirty hands, letting your dog run around with dirty paws can spread germs to your home. Some viruses and bacteria are highly contagious through the air as well.

5) Be Cautious When Separating Pets

Like children, some cats and dogs may have sleeping allergies or other health issues that could put their health at risk. Before you adopt or get a new pet, ask a veterinarian to check for allergies that might affect the animal’s health.
